One of the biggest misconceptions in the business world today is that it takes cash to motivate people to behave or perform in certain ways. In fact, the best kind of motivation is created intrinsically, without thinking about monetary reward. Can you motivate without a budget? Sure, it’s easy. And the ability to instill motivation without money is one of the defining characteristics of a great leader.

How To Motivate Through Leadership

There are countless numbers of books in the library or online that discuss motivation. It’s a pretty common topic among business leaders and a tool that, when developed, can improve organizational performance and keep employees happy. But as a leader, how can you motivate by leading?

Be Credible

Your team depends on you to guide them and show them how to behave. Be trustworthy and do what you say you’ll do. And get out front, where they can see you and you can see them.

Review Performance Equitably

Give praise promptly and specifically when it is due. Learn to root out poor management. It’s a huge drain on staff morale and adversely affects business performance. Address non-performance quickly, consistently and unemotionally.

Provide Space When Needed

Give your team the flexibility and the room they need to do their work. Not many people work better with micro-management. Having room to grow gives employees the opportunities they need to focus and stay resolute.

Share a Compelling Vision

Nothing is more energizing or motivating than creating a persuasive vision of the future. Employees who believe in you and what you stand for will want to move forward with you.

As a leader, you have the unique opportunity to do something truly amazing. Through credible, equitable and compelling leadership, you can motivate and captivate a team who will want to work tirelessly by your side. Remind people that you are there for them and above all others you can motivate – simply by leading.
